Android Tablet - Flytouch 3 / SuperPAD 2 X220 - Review
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:20:38 PM »
Reference:
Device Details
Model Number: DISCO10
Android Version: 2.2-20110529
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 zjd@dtlinuxserver #1
Build Number: FRF85B

Market App Version: 2.2.7
Google Sky Version: 1.6.1

Battery:
Initially very poor but improving with use though charging is still very slow
Charge rate (while off) is approx 15% per hour
Discharge Stats:
TBA

Boot/Shutdown:
Boot: 1:06
Shutdown: 0:10

Screen: Responsive though not multitouch

Speakers: Poor, low volume (as expected)

GPS:
- Satellite lock only with antenna attached
- Requires 3G internet connection for maps for GPS

Power Adapter:
Output 5v 2a (1212R-C) - Low quality under-rated adapter. Burnt-out within 2 weeks. Better alternative sourced from eBay.

Software
Android Market: Flytouch 3 tablet is not fully supported by the android market yet. see forum notes.

Google Sky:
- Due to above, isnt listed in marketplace
- doesnt install from webpage sue to known issue
- solution: downloaded APK installer and installed with APK Manager
- Issue: North/South are reversed and there is no option to adjust this.

Smart Task Switcher: Good app since there seems to be no app switcher in-built

Quickpic: Good app, better than in-built image browser

Coolreader: Good for reading mobi files.

Skype: No video option

Flash: Has 10.1 installed but only way to install 10.2 is to do a firmware flash so unable to play flash movies or You Tube.

Astro Apps

Stargazing Log:
Moon Phases:
Moon 3D:
Meteor shower:
Skeye:
Satellite AR:
Astro:
Astro Quiz:

Conclusion:

Likes:
- BBC News app
- Cool Reader app
- Size/Portability

Dislikes:
- Battery Life
- Typing on the on-screen keyboard (USB one is fine (mouse too))
- Canon EOS camera is not detected as a device though a card reader works

Do I keep it? This is the question I've been pondering for 2 weeks while on holiday and tbh I STILL don't have an answer.

I certainly have the option of returning due to the following:
- There are 2 small white flecks below the glass
- The power adapter failed within 2 weeks
- The Android Market support is not, well, "supported"
- The battery life is poor, though tbh it's probably within the quoted range of the advert.

Reasons for NOT returning it:
- I may be able to flash it to a better firmware version which supports Flash 10.2 and a later Marketplace app
- Marketplace support may be improved (sometime?)
- A return will mean a 15% restocking fee + postage costs

Summary:
Yes, I'm going to keep it :P

I have upgraded the firmware to the one in this link: http://androidforums.com/flytouch-3-all-things-root/307846-latest-flytouch-3-modded-roms-updated.html and now the marketplace, you tube, etc are all working perfectly! the desktop is a little less fancy but now I know how to do it I can upgrade again at a later date. Just need to ensure that I backup my data.

Happy now. Any more details as and when I get them :)

Paul

Good news that the firmware has improved matters a bit Paul.

Its quite a well spec'd tablet, hopefully someone will get a gingerbread
or better still a Honeycomb custom rom for it to truly unlock its
capabilities.

Again an improvement. Haven't used the tablet for a few months and just noticed that there is a newer firmware.

So I've installed tim6a and it seems to have resolved some of the issues I was having before.

The marketplace seems to be much better supported now too thought battery life hasn't improved of course

http://thetabletpccomparison.com/how-to-update-firmware-on-flytouch-3-to-tim6a.html

I was actually on the hunt for a 'how to' on installing a linux distro on the pad instead but this'll do until someone comes up with a solution :)
