Right i need to get a motor drive....
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:25:55 PM »
Im moving more and more into photography rather than just viewing i need advice on what drives or guiders to get. Bare in mind im a poor sod so used second hand or bargains are what im after. Would i get away with a duel axis motor drive for my EQ2 of would i be better getting an EQ3 with GOTO drives and would and autoguider and guide scope have a lot of benefits even if im only a beginner need to know what to invest in. lol

AP starts to make your bank manager rub his hands and partners seek out laweyrs ! It can get expensive but you can also do basic stuff. Maybe an idea to set a realistic budget and then folks here can maybe advise best course of action..

W.O.R.D. ^

Didn't take long for you to catch the bug, I see... :

And no no imaging is not my main concern if i get some images its a bonus im more into learning and exploring visually pictures is a bonus

 ;)

It's a potentially bankrupting door you're opening, but like Pete says, you'll have no shortage of help and info from folks here and elsewhere, probably because we've all been through that initial "wtf do I buy first?!?" stage.

Think carefully about what you want to image and how you want to do it.

An EQ3 with motors is maybe fine for sticking your camera atop and doing some cool widefield shots.

Putting a scope/guiderscope/guide camera/image camera on the same EQ3 and results become frustrating at best.

Minimum ,IMHO, would be a HEQ5, preferrably an EQ6 ( future proofs some gear used ) .

Pete's advice about getting at least a HEQ5 is sound but there is a guy over on SGL guiding with an EQ3-2, if you go down that road it would be cheaper and bridge the gap while you save for a better mount.  He even has the same scope as you and similar camera! :)

I'm sure if you PM'd him he would give you the details on what you would need to do to achieve guiding with your mount - http://stargazerslounge.com/imaging-discussion/169572-woohoo-guiding-eq3-2-a.html#post2094367

I thought you would like his images!! Good luck with the mod on the EQ3-2 if you decide to give it a go.  :)

You will also need a guide camera. What do you intend to use for that Scott?

A standard Webcam probably wont be sensitive enough without a LX modification.... It might be better for you to try to pick up a 2nd hand Meade DSI.... I have a DSI Pro which is mono and Blinky uses a DSI OSC.... both make very good guide cams.
