Eyepiece opinions and advice needed
« on: April 02, 2016, 05:09:03 PM »

Hi guys,

I started out with a 130m with the stock eyepieces, however (much to my wife's exasperation) I just bought a second hand 200p from ebay. The new scope came very very cheap, but without eyepieces. While I can use the stock skywatcher ones from the 130m for the moment my (wife's) plan is that the 130 will go in the near future, leaving me with a need for some new glassware :) After looking round various discussions I have a short list I'd like opinions and advice on please. If you have alternatives please give them.

So, I have a limited budget (approx 150 ish) and (as a total newbie) I don't really know what I want to focus on, so hoping to get ones that can be used for a bit of planet watching and some DSO's.

Gary,
The 8mm BST starguider will work well for planets in the 200p (even the 5mm BST on nights of good seeing)
Your choice of 18mm could be replaced again by a BST which will give you more field of view, 60 degrees as opposed to the 50 degrees of the Baader. As for the 25mm for low power DSO viewing, does the 200p focuser come with a 2" adapter? if so, if up to me I'd go for a 28mm to 32mm 2" eyepiece. This will let you see more sky - essential for nicely framing some DSO's - Andromeda galaxy for example.

Don't rush in to buy anything in a hurry as the nights will soon be too light to get any decent observing in, the second hand market usually comes to life in the lighter months! Also try to get out to one of our meets - if this weather ever improves, this will let you see different types of eyepieces, you will be able to look through and even try them in your own scope before you decide.

Hi Lorne,

Thanks for that. In my head I was leaning towards getting 3 BSTs as they seem to get consistently good reviews. My 200p has the standard 2" single speed crayford focuser with a 1.25" adapter. It was missing the 2" one, but I've ordered a replacement from astroboot. Do you mean a 28-32 zoom eyepiece, or just one in that range?

good idea to wait (must restrain myself) - hopefully if the weather clears up sometime it will be worth making a trip up to the Rigg to meet you guys. I will apologise in advance for the drool...

I have an 8mm BST you can look through if you make it to one of our meets. It's a nice eyepiece!
