Anyone know where I can get some holes drilled?
« on: September 11, 2015, 04:01:11 PM »
I've rung a few local businesses but had no success.

Two brake disks and a flat disk.  Guess what they're for?

Thanks in anticipation

Hmm who are you ringing ?  I think you'll have to go to a machine shop to get brake disks
drilled as they wouldn't be easy.  Is this for a pier top John ?

Mmmm, they are iron so should be easy drilled. I'll have a go if you want john. If there of there abouts is good enough then I could do it at home. If it needs to be super accurate then I'd have to take them into work.

Gary,
I imagine super accuracy isn't an issue when its a 16mm threaded rod going through an 18mm hole - a rattling good fit  ;)

John,
Is the 10mm a clearance hole or is it for a 10mm thread? And do you really require a countersunk edge to the hole when it will probably be hidden by a 16mm washer in addition to 16mm nuts to tighten onto the threaded rod.

L.

PS..... how much 16mm threaded rod, and how many 16mm nuts (possibly washers too) do you require?

Thanks for the offer Gary and I'll happily take you up on it.   Whilst the dimensions are not super critical I did want it to look good and symmetrical.   It will sit on top of a concrete filled 200mm drain pipe with the 16mm rod on the outside.  A bit like the photo below (from SGL).   Also I hope to get each piece powder coated and this led me to want some countersinking as there would be less chance of damaging the paint on the sharp edge of the drilled holes.

Lorne, I've got on my Amazon wish list 1 metre of 16mm rod and two packs of ten* 16mm nuts and washers.   I haven't clicked the buy button yet though.  :D

* I actually need 16 nuts and washers but they come in packs of ten.

Kat, The various small engineering companies offering bespoke 'drilling services' I contacted wouldn't touch it.  They were all looking for a production run of at least 50 items.

John,
If you can wait until Tuesday (I'm not back in work until Monday nightshift) I'll see what I can come up with in the way of rod, nuts and washers, and possibly an 18mm - or closest imperial sized drill. I'll post from work on Monday night at some point.

The powder coating will get damaged by the washers when the nuts get tightened

OK John, for some reason I thought the holes would be 12mn..... If they are 16mm then I'll have to take it into work to the pillar drill, which is not a problem.

The holes are 18mm which gives a loose fit for the 16mm threaded rod based on this http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metric-threads-d_777.html

I'll bring them over when it suits you.   Can you send me a pm with location and time?

Looks a good job Gary,

John, if you wait until later tonight before you arrange to collect from Gary you will know if the 16mm threaded rod, nuts and washers are available. If so I can get them to Gary's and it will only be one trip for you to collect. I'll post as soon as I find out.

Progress and a quick test fitting (not that it'll be that high in normal use).
