Nikon lens?
« on: October 30, 2014, 05:44:09 PM »
Anyone any recommendations for a telephoto lens for a nikon D70?
Its an old camera so dont want to go daft with the price as if I get more
Into using a DSLR I'll probably upgrade to a newer model - it will be
Mostly terrestrial pics with the odd night sky shot.
Ive got a 18 - 50 lens on the camera at the moment.
Thanks, L.

How much you looking to spend? Money no object then 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-210 f/2.8

Otherwise I have a 70-300 f/4.5-f/5.6 VR for sale, excellent condition

That looks a very decent lens Mike but probably would be wasted on my level of DSLR expertise  ;D

The only way to learn is to do.  I was using it on my D80 and it also works on the D60. Looking for 250 if you are interested. Will happily teach you how to use it

Some great Milky Way pics on that link Neil, wide lenses seem to be the way to go for shots like that. Mike's 70 - 300VR, good lens that it is, probably isn't what I need for widefield shots similar to the ones on that website. I'll stick with what I've got meantime to see what results I come up with.

yep .. a nice wide angle lens is what you what for milkyway shots ,  I use an 8mm Samyang , but the  18mm end of your zoom is a great place to start , you will be able to  expose a shot for 25-30 seconds using your lens , ;)

Get yourself a 2nd hand 18-200vr. It's a brilliant do everything good lens. I loved mine and had it for 4 years. You can offset the cost by selling the 18-50.

Got myself a used 55 - 200, thinking about buying a new d3200 which would come with the 18 - 55 VR, quite liking this photography lark  ;D

Well, I have imaged the catseye, well both of them........ attached to the rest of my cat. Apart from the other week at Harperrig any pics I've taken have all been during daylight! I'm far enough from the event horizon that I wont be sucked into the darkness of AP  :-X
