Tablets again
« on: July 14, 2013, 04:12:12 PM »
Considering a small tablet again and wondering what you guys who use them think of your models?

Would like:
  • USB connectivity to view my camera photos (unsure if this is possible)
  • Ability to put mp3s and avis onto the device and play them (so not an iPad then)
  • Decent battery life
  • Astro apps with red mode obviously
  • GPS/Satnav (maybe)
  • Sub-200
  • 3G capable?
  • Good access to andriod app store (are there any not tied to a supplier?)

I spoke with the IT guys at work about that, they say either the Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 2. The Nexus will out perform the Samsung marginally, however the Nexus has a slightly more fragile screen.
The Samsung is cheaper.
They also said to stay away from rip off Apple products, closed source is carp compared with Android open source.

Everything will be OK in the end, if its not OK its not the end........

Thanks guys,

I'll need to investigate the price and functionality of both the Nexus 7 and the Sam tab 2 I think

Can I put movie files and mp3s on either?

and what about the possibility of connecting an EOS to the tablets and viewing RAW files on the tablet. I don't even know if this is possible lol

Unlike Apple products Paul Android is only really limited by the apps you use, I use mxplayer and so far it's never let me down with a format :)

Just saw your edit so I'll edit this: I saw this a short time ago looking for something else but it may lead to an answer for your question: http://dslrcontroller.com/

Thanks Gav, that leads me towards the Nexus 7 then

We get a lot of problem reports with these models.
For as of yet unknown reasons, it seems recent firmwares are having some trouble with DSLR Controller on these devices for some users. For other users it works fine.

It does seem that the Nexus has better CPU and resolution but lacks a back facing camera. Hmmm

I use the Nexus , its awesome, the Samsung does have some issues, so does the Nexus but no where near the issues that the Samsung has, i also use the Samsung Galaxy phone as a Satellite link up for the Nexus , which is good, i also use it for the Laptop when out and about, its also wise to get a data Stick that you can store the images, the internal memory inst great but good enough suppose

Reserved a Nexus for collection tomorrow at Argos. Unless anyone knows where I can get a 32gb/3g one for less than 239?

Nexus 7 is an amazing bit of kit. Had mine since the UK release and it's had a hell of a lot more use than my previous iPad had. the 7" size is so much more usable. Mate it up to a NAS drive and stream to it, spotify and bluetoooth connection to a sound dock is amazing. Use it via bluetooth in the car for audio, replaced my Kindle with it. Get an OTG cable and use USB storage with it, even connect up a PS3/wired xbox controller. Huge range of apps and you get pure Android, not Android with a Samsung overlay and fast updates when Android updates. Will I get another iPad? Probably when the iPad mini gets a retina display but will be looking at the next generation nexus as well!
