I've never found a need to install from anywhere other than the Play store but if you need
to the option to trust 'Unknown sources' generally under the Applications section
of the OS settings.

I read a review of a protective case that said that the magnet in the case cover interferes with the compass

Most of the other case reviews don't mention this issue but maybe that's because they don't look at star maps etc.

Can anyone recommend a cover that they know doesn't have this issue?

Hmmm can't help you Paul as i don't have a Nexus 7 and I'm too
cheap with these things, I just bought a rubber cover for my tablet
as it rarely away anywhere and use that along with one of those
film protectors for the screen.

Slightly off topic, but I never even gave the magnet problem a thought with my Android fone, might be best to remove the cover when using the compass / planetarium apps.

Ok to find the option go to Settings, then Security, scroll down to Unknown Sources and check the box next to it, as far as Covers/Cases goes their is an issue with the ones that have the small magnetic clasps, however i read up on this and its apparently a good indicator that their is a fault with the tablet as it shows that the shielding inside is faulty, however this has not been openly discussed, nor has it been proven that it has a link, officially , yet, but i went for a screen protector and a rubber gel protective cover, the cases i dont like, with the cover its just so much more accessible and doesn't burst at the seems after a few months, so your choice really

I'll have a think about what to do re. protection of the screen

even if you get a case, get a screen protector,  my mate has a folding case he has no issues with the magnetic clasp, but i do know that their is an issue with some as a few mates at uni got them last year and they do muck up the sensors

There's a new nexus 7 about to be launched it'll be interesting to see what they improve. I'm in the bitten fruit camp myself with an iPad4 never really found it restrictive in any way. Best selection of apps still and I can play any format from any source so I'd never put anyone off buying one.  Having said that there are good products to be had for less outlay like the Nexus 7 so it's all about choice
