Title: Android Tablets
Post by: G1ZmO on June 26, 2011, 11:24:40 AM
I'm looking for an Android Tablet

The specs I'd want are:
8" size
GPS inbuilt
Android 2.3 OS
Under 200

You have no idea the trouble I'm having finding such an item in the UK. (Ideally I want it delivered before Fri 1st)

Does anyone know of a decent online store that sells tablets?

Does anyone have an opinion about the merits of OS 2.3 over 2.2?

I found a 10" tab with GPS inbuilt but it's OS 2.2

I just feel that 10" is a bit large

Hmmmm I can imagine, I've looked at the android tablet market on
and off for awhile and its all a bit chaotic at the moment, especially
for a gingerbread or above spec'd one.

I can't really help I'm afraid, normally I'd say your best bets are ebuyer
or expansys but most likely they won't have a 200 tablet.

Well, I couldn't resist and even though it's OS2.2, I've gone for the 10" one above. Just hoping it arrives before I go on hols next Friday.

I'll do a wee review once I've used it a bit. CANNY WAIT! :)

The only reason I got the iPad over the android was built in 3g - i'm not running about with a dongle plugged in to a tablet!

The battery life seems to be at least double most of the android ones.

The screen is known to be good.

My next tablet might well be an android one if the market settles down a bit and they improve the above specs - especially battery

Yea, there are some models of android tab with 3G inbuilt but my budget just wouldnt stretch that far.

I'm sure the iPad is a quality product but I'm sure part of the cost is due to the brandname. For me this tab will be an interim while I wait for the better OS and fully featured models to come out and come down in price.

Looking forward to checking out the astro apps :)

Will do a review once I get it.

Hi Paul

Let us know how you get on with it. We (well, the missus does and I get a shot) have an iPad, which works really well, but I'd be interested in a cheap tablet for my mum. Looking forward to your review.

Cheers, Martin

Woohoo it's here!

Steve: what was the name of that app on your HTC phone for the satellites?

Flybys or Heavens Above for satellites

Google sky map isn't bad

SolarisAlpha for Aurora/solar activity

It's on the Android Market - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.agi.android.augmentedreality&feature=search_result

I've been meaning to do a full list of all the astro apps that I've downloaded for my phone in the new software section but I've not had a chance yet.  :)

I also have the ones Kathleen has listed, they are all good, sat24 and astro panel (NEW) are good for weather.  :)

Hope someonme else finds these useful as well.

I'm off to download some of the apps from steve's link.

Nice one Douglas, I've got Where is Io but not the other 2... I think we definitely need to do a list of apps in the software section!!  :)

Im finding the search function for apps annoying. Search for "Google Skymap" and you get everything but! Including a lot of chinese apps

tried connecting the camera to it but it doesn't pick it up as a storage device.....

I can copy the pics off the card with the card reader but it wont display them!

Arg! This is not going to plan!

Steve,

I tired to find it but couldn't get it either! I agree with Paul that the market search is pretty crap.

Anyway here's a link to the app. Hopefully this will help you get it on your phone. I really like as I can tick off objects as I have sen them. It appeals to the trainspotter in me i think!

That's weird Paul I also have SkEye and it shows constellation names on my phone, it should do until you find sky map. The reason I downloaded it was because you are supposed to be able to use it as a 'push to' if you strap your phone/tablet to your scope. I haven't tried it yet though so I don't know how good it will work.

I found Polar Finder no probs but still can't find Messier Objects on Android Market.... I even used the QR code scanner on my phone and it still couldn't find it...... wierd!!

My main gripe at the moment is that it doesnt see the EOS as a storage device when connected so I can't browse my pictures. One of the main reasons for taking it on holiday.

Tried with a CF card reader last night but it still wouldnt work. Going to try a few different picture viewers with the CF reader today and see if I can find a resolution.

Well first of all is the tablet a usb hub ?  If it isn't then I doubt it will power
the usb interface to the camera and probably wouldn't subsquently mount the device.

My recommendation is download a file manager :

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.explorer&feature=more_from_developer

and see if you can navigate to the camera to double check if its mounted.  Often the gallery
will scan for new pictures on a reboot I have found.

Here is Google sky map, if you log into the Android store you can
instruct it to download to your phone from there or do a search for sky map that might find it.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid&feature=search_result

Lastly, get a barcode scanner, that way you can download using QR codes which is useful
if you see an app online (instead of having to search for it).

I think part of my issue is that my device isnt registered on the marketplace and to do so it seems to want to send a text to my "android smartphone" which this isnt. I'm obviously missing something lol

Tried to install that file explorer.... There are no android devices associated with your account. F$%!

Yep, I've installed apps from the marketplace but when I go to install that file explorer it says I dont have any devices associated with the account (gmail account)

Paul if you email me your gmail account I will send you links to the apps
on the market place using ShareApps.

Oh I just recalled I have your other email, I'll try that...

pm'd you the email address.

Have had a limited success btw :)

Quikpics will read the CF card in the card reader! so I CAN check my pics on holiday (PHEW)

just need to get the marketplace thingy sorted for astro apps :)

I'll try searching by name on the marketplace again

Known problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=14976

Have tried creating a new gmail acc from tablet. same issue thereafter.

someone suggested factory reset. Manual says Menu - System Settings - Privacy - defaults but "privacy" doesnt exist!

Not good Paul, I hope you get it sorted before you go on holiday!!

Although I had a Google account I had to set up a new one through my phone to access the Android Market which was a bit annoying. So the things you're trying are worth a go, it must be really frustrating when they don't work though...... Good luck! :-)

Hmmm yeah it seems to a problem that affected a great many
people.  Shame as things like this will put people off the Android
experience (freedom rocks  8)).

Hang in there, the folks at the Google Chocolate factory will get
it sorted.

Another oddity. Because the camera is on the front (facing me) the Satellite AR program shows my face with the satellites overlaid LOL

I've accepted that I can't get google sky on unless I can download it and install it manually? Can you do that?

We're leaving tomorrow and I'll be back online on Mon 11th unless I get access in Portugal.

I'm very unimpressed by the battery life of the tab btw

Fully charged at 07:00, turned off and left until 19:00, battery was at 12% :(
To charge it takes 20%/hour when off and 10%/hour when in standby. Hardly charges at all during use when plugged in.

Well I know that the average smartphone lasts one day of average useage
until needing charged.

Not good about your experiences so far Paul I must confess, I hope things improve
very soon and more importantly you's have a great holiday.

it was the battery life that put me off the current android tablets, i believe the galaxy tab etc have better batter lifes but your paying as much as for an ipad. I can get 2-3 days out of the ipad before charging - it seems to usen very little power in standby. I got the ipad on a contract - its the 3 g version i have, found i was only using my android phone for checkimg emails and surfing the net. Didn't use it for calls really. So for £99 and £25 per month I got the 64 gb 3g ipad.

its pretty much replaced the laptop for me, its much quicker to pick this up. I can logon and do my internet banking and chevk e-mails in almost the time it takes to boot up the laptop.

I also find the on screen keyboard quite good, its quick to type on with even just 1 handed operation.

I haven't really missed not having flash installed, you can still get youtube and iplayer on the ipad.

I mainly use wifi in the house for Internet so as not to ue up too much of my 15gb mobile internet allowance. Out and about as long as I have a reasonable signal the Internet appears to be pretty quick.

Got back early this morning and put the tab on to charge overnight. Woke in the morning to find that the charger is dead! (It was a very cheap 5v 2a one with an uncommonly small connector)

Have ordered another charger in the interim while I decide whether to return the tab to the seller.

I'll do a proper review shortly :)

btw Google Sky (1.6) is flipped North/South and there seems to be no way of correcting it.

See my review on the Flytouch. tbh I've not used it for a few weeks I was so disappointed with it. Put it on yesterday and got a load of updates. None of which were an improvement.

On the plus side there are reports of people getting linux to run on them so I'm looking forward to a linux rom release

I ended up an iPad saddle but won't cross to Apple permanently. Will prob get a top notch Android tablet next time around. One cheap Android tablet I did buy earlier this year was the Cloudnine Neuropad2 on Amazon Marketplace. It operates at a leisurely pace but is great for the sub-100 price. It has a capacitive screen, support for flash and BBC iPlayer, etc. For the odd check of email, Google Drive, Amazon, EBay, Picasa, NAS access, multi-calendar, Evernote, radio, Astro Panel, Google Sky, SkEye, maps, Skype, etc it's moderately effective. I hope to use it for guides, etc for astronomy when don't want the lappie or iPad outside.
